. R. Shlomo Yosef Zevin wrote a classic article demonstrating that in the Merchant of Venice, Antonio’s contract with Shylock to pay a pound of flesh in the event of a loan default is unenforceable under Jewish law. Just as Antonio cannot pledge assets that he doesn’t own, he cannot create such a pledge on his body.
